??????????Fashion Fabulous was thrilled to be invited by The Director and Trustees of The Fan Museum to a private view of the new exhibition, Globe Trotting on 9th September. Curated from The Fan Museum’s renowned collection archives the Globe Trotting Exhibition reveals intriguing insights into the culture and production of fans from around the world.

Amongst the highlights were fans hailing from Africa, Oceania, Caribbean, Sri Lanka/Burma  South East Asia and the Americas that included the museum’s earliest fan, a pre-Columbian fixed fan plaited and woven – edged with yellow feathers dated back to the 11th century. As we wandered around the elegant displayed exhibits by geographical region one discovers an immense diversity and evolution of fans made from a plethora of materials and fascinating construction.

DSCN3862-1Hélène Alexander MBE gave a short informative speech to a gathering of fan enthusiasts describing some of her favourites including a large feather French 1918 mother of pearl fan featuring the entire bird of paradise feathers reconstructed into the fan complete with bird’s stuffed head! Jacob Moss MA, curator of The Fan Museum gave us a quick whistle stop tour of the rest of the museum – many exhibits were visually stunning. Some such as the fan by Dali was well worth seeing. We can’t wait to return again!

??????????At the end of the evening, refreshments were served downstairs in the very pretty Orangery.
