Restaurant critic and fashion writer Russell Rose reviewed more than 280 restaurants and cafés in his book Veggie & Organic London. Gate Hammersmith has been one of the most popular and successful vegetarian restaurants in London so when Fashion Fabulous learnt that a new sister restaurant The Gate: Seymour Place had just opened two months ago as soon we booked in to check it out! A full review will be appearing in the next edition of Fashion Fabulous London available in all good bookshops and on Amazon and many independent bookshop websites.

The Gate: Seymour Place, 22-24 Seymour Place London W1H 7NL | Marble Arch LU, 10 min walk | Mon-Fri 12pm-11pm, Sat 9am-10pm, Sun 9am-10.30pm.

Vegetarian, European, Modern  T: 0207 724 6656   http://thegaterestaurants.com/seymour-place

A welcome addition to Marylebone’s restaurant scene, The Gate Seymour Place’s vegetarian food is inspiring but at times let down by some poor service. Take the booking service. We phoned through for a good table in advance only to find that when we arrived we offered a table in their empty basement. A bit of a shame as the ground floor was packed full. Our advice would be to reserve for 7pm at which there’s a very good chance you’ll secure a table where all the action is and avoid any offer of being seated in the basement or by the ground floor bar.

dscn6454-1

The miserable table was made up for with the inviting menu offerings of eight starters, seven mains and seven desserts. Starter of Cous Cous Fritters (see above), presents as three slightly spiced cous cous and feta fritters balls with a Moroccan style carrot puree and was a delicious. Three Onion Tart turned out to be a good choice too and arrives as a slice consisting of leeks and shallots baked in a parmesan pastry topped with caramelised red onions that had a yummy lightness and delightful flavour finished with balsamic reduction.

dscn6456-1

On mains, the photogenic Wild Mushroom Risotto Cake is a well-constructed tower of sautéed girolle, pleurote, pied de mouton and trompette mushrooms, with rocket and cheese finished with a delicious lemon truffle dressing and was an excellent dish.

dscn6450-1

Fashion-wise, it’s very relaxed casual dress and attracts a central and north London mixed aged crowd from twenties to seventies. Among the labels spotted were Margaret Howell, Whistles and Cos.The restaurant has a fairly plain and minimal décor but pleasant enough.

Signature main dish of Aubergine Schnitzel (picture 1) was as good as we had at The Gate Hammersmith. If you like veggie moussaka, you’ll love this. It comes layered with smoked cheddar, basil pesto, roasted red peppers and plum tomatoes. Unfortunately, this time round the Lyonnaise potatoes varied in temperature but otherwise was a very good dish and to be recommended.

Mains come up quite large and whilst we ordered a side dish of Chunky Polenta Chips with aioli to share they were a bit of a disappointment.

The long wine list has a choice of vegan, organic and biodynamic choices as well as cocktail, beers and ciders. When we asked the waiter to suggest wine pairings to our food he looked bemused that anyone make such a request of him. In the end, he suggested a Malbec to go with everything and advised that the speciality of the house Natural Wines were not so good. Ordering a carafe of Malbec La Mascota at £25, it was of average quality and nothing to write home about. Wanting to experience something from the organic/biodynamic Natural Wine Selection we opted for an Austrian white, Grüner Veltliner at £8.50 a glass to go with the Risotto Cake that turned out to be very good indeed and one we can recommend!.

A two course meal with drinks is about £40.

Fashion Fabulous gets lots of requests for what are the best hotspots during London Fashion Week. Well, we can say confidently the just opened QP Lounge on Dover Street, Mayfair is most definitely a real go to top notch restaurant and bar already building up a strong reputation with London and international fashionistas. A full review will be appearing in the next edition of Fashion Fabulous London available in all good bookshops and on Amazon and many independent bookshop websites. Here’s a taster of their great opening night that we went to!

QP Lounge, 34 Dover Street, Mayfair, London W1S 1NG, t: 0203 096 1444, http://www.qp-ldn.com

QP already has a great reputation for Italian cuisine in Mayfair so it was no surprise that there was going to be a fantastic turnout for their new downstairs QP Lounge, a cool spacious beautifully decorated comfortable room.

A big opening is often a good predictor of great food and drink and this Dolce Vita themed party here was no exception. With a magnificent Aston Martin parked outside and a host of models and socialites in Dolce Vita styled in black and white flowing dresses this was a night to remember!

dscn6353-1

Dover Street is now a stronghold for designer brands with Victoria Beckham at No.30. Christian Louboutin Men’s at 35, Jimmy Choo Men’s 35a, and McQ at 14 and Wolf & Badger to name but a few.

On entering the ground floor QP Restaurant there’s a stunning chandelier, smart tables and a very good bar!

dscn6349-1

Downstairs, the bar is nice and long with  some great pictures on the walls and lots of tables. Service was excellent. The downstairs is often used for private events such as art exhibitions.

dscn6347-1

Moscow Mule is a one of the signature cocktails here – and very good it is too!

dscn6348-1

….There’s a formidable selection of wines too to pair with the Michelin star food.

The QP bar food list is reasonably priced with Chicken Caesar Salad £10, Salmon Tartare, avocado and tomatoes £16 and plenty of other yummy choices. We loved the restaurant’s fillet of line caught seabass that will set you back £30.

dscn6352-1

Chanel, Versace and Valentino were just a few of the designer labels we saw people wearing although we did see some more independent labels from designer-run boutiques such as Nico Didonna from nearby Soho, Unconditional in Covent Garden and Rupert Sanderson off Berkeley Square. Fashion Fabulous’s Russell Rose (pictured above) went for an Armani linen suit.

Can’t wait to go again to the QP Lounge – and try a few of their  Martinis!

Fashion Fabulous visits 450 restaurants, bars, cafes and hotels in London and picks the top 130 for reviews in our chapter on places where fashionistas go. We were pleased when we dropped into Heist Bank Paddington, a cool independent newly opened pizza restaurant and bar with cocktails and craft beers in a terrific décor venue that we couldn’t wait to share our news with you! A full review will be appearing in the next edition of Fashion Fabulous London available in all good bookshops and on Amazon and many independent bookshop websites.

Heist Bank | 5 North Wharf, Paddington, London W2 1LA | t: 0207 723 8080 |  Mon-Thur 8am-11:30pm, Fri- Sat 8am-12pm, Sun 9am-10.30pm | Nearest tube Paddington LU, 5 min walk | http://www.heistbank.com/

Pizzas, International Cuisine, Cocktails and Craft beers

Heist Bank impresses as a great casual drink and dining joint that won’t rob your beloved credit card blind! The pizzas alone are worth beating a path through the concrete jungle of the modern Paddington Basin business area. Décor-wise it’s big with a Hackney/Shoreditch raw stripped out urban look decked out with contemporary art on the walls, a pool table area and karaoke room downstairs!

Starter of Olive and Cheese Curd Donuts were yummy and imparted a quite satisfying olivey-flavour whilst we looked through the short menu consisting of eight small/starter plates at about £5, nine wood-fired pizzas at £9-£11, five large plates that included steak, lamb, pork loin, chicken and rainbow trout around £16.

DSCN6324-1

We applied the rule that if there’s more pizzas than anything else on the menu, then that what’s you order. The Three Mushroom Pizza arrives with burnt butter sauce and tarragon and is enjoyable as was the Smoked Sausage and Smoked mozzarella, cabbage, chilli version.

DSCN6328-1

We could see from the open kitchen that all the ingredients were very fresh.

DSCN6331-1

Cocktails will set you back around £10. We particularly liked the  “Dark and Stormy” rum-based cocktail that had a great flavour (featured above). Craft beers here are very popular and the wine list is very reasonably priced  .

DSCN6327-1

We loved this Smashed Peas, Goats cheese and mint with courgettes pizza too! Fashion-wise, Heist Bank get after-work crowd from down the road Marks & Spencer’s head office, Reiss, Zara and Topshop dressed nurses and medical staff from nearby St Mary’s Hospital, and jeans and T-shirted folk from the nearby boat moorings at Paddington Basin.

Whether you work, shop or find yourself in the Paddington, Edgware Road, Bayswater areas Heist Bank is well worth dropping by for a great time!

DSCN6185-1Restaurant critic and fashion writer Russell Rose reviewed more than 280 restaurants and cafés in his book Veggie & Organic London. Mildreds Soho has been one of the most popular and successful vegetarian restaurants in London so when Fashion Fabulous learnt that a sister restaurant Mildreds Camden had just opened as soon as you could say Pan Fried Haloumi we were down there like a shot! A full review will be appearing in the next edition of Fashion Fabulous London available in all good bookshops and on Amazon and many independent bookshop websites.

Mildreds Camden, 9 Jamestown Road, Camden, London NW1 7BW. Camden Town LU, 5 min walk Mon-Fri 12pm-11pm, Sat 11am-11pm, Sun 11am-6pm.

Vegetarian, European, Modern T: 0207 482 4200  http://www.mildreds.co.uk

Camden has a great new vegetarian restaurant! Mildreds was packed by 7.30pm whilst Wagamama next door was virtually empty. We liked the whole atmosphere, the attentive service, modern seating and décor and the music playlist was at a comfortable volume to hold a conversation without shouting.

The menu will have a familiar feel to regular customers at the Soho resto. Gyoza dumplings, vegeburgers, burritos and stir frys to name but a few. Looking through past menus, ingredients and accompaniments do change so there’s always something new on offer. Panfried Halloumi starter, for example, was one of the best halloumi we have tasted and arrived attractively presented with roast peppers, leeks with smoked chilli jam. Rose Harissa Hoummus with smokey babaganoush and chargrilled flat bread was delicious too.

For mains there’s an attractive choice of three vegeburgers, substantial and well stacked, four salads and five “large” plate choices. Being adventurous we opted for the Mock Duck Cassolet (see image above) new to Mildreds and exclusive to the Camden restaurant. We found it a very enjoyable dish arriving with white beans, spinach and herb crust. Did it hit the mark for duck flavour for us? Well, no, but in its own right it was a new recipe with merit.

DSCN6184-1 Black Bean and Tomatillo Rice Burrito is a very well- constructed veggie dish with a vegan option available. The vegetarian version comes with a nice ranchero sauce and grilled cheese, smashed avocado, sour cream and pico de gallo. Our helpful waiter suggested a side of sweet potatoes with basil mayo that proved to be a good choice and we found the Domaine Bousquet Malbec an apt pairing and very reasonable value at £6.25 a glass from the all organic wine list.

DSCN6191-1The night we dined 90% of the diners were female it was positively buzzing. Many were knocking back the organic cocktails at £7 a pop. Fashion-wise it’s All Saints, Punky Fish and Topshop with many wearing jeans and guys wearing Topman, Ted Baker and H&M.

DSCN6188-1Of the seven desserts, Sticky Toffee Pudding is a large enough portion to feed the whole of the restaurant! Certainly enough for two people its great value for £6.50.

DSCN6190-1The Coconut Pana Cotta with salted caramel comes with a lovely caramel expresso sauce slides down well.

DSCN6187-2A three course meal without drinks is about £27.

DSCN2367-1We mentioned in our last feature that Fashion Fabulous looks at 450 restaurants, bars, cafes and hotels in London and picks the top 130 for reviews in our chapter on places where fashionistas go. Here we give an excerpt from the current edition of Fashion Fabulous London.

The Wolseley, 160 Piccadilly, London W1J 9EB. Green Park LU, 1 min walk Mon-Sat 7am-midnight, Sat 8am-midnight, Sun 8am-11pm.

Modern European cuisine T: 0207 499 6996 http://www.thewolseley.com

The Wolseley is a very popular restaurant attracting smart dressed London socialites. From Smoked Salmon to Wiener Holstein it serves excellent non-fussy traditional British, Austrian and French meals. The Chopped Liver starter is delicious and the Avocado first course very good too, but the Bread Stick and Butter was not worth the £2 cover charge. Our main choice of Duck Confit was sold out and the waiter seemed pleased to inform us that we had ordered the last chicken dish. Our Slow Cooked Lamb with Beans was substantial although it should have been a bit hotter, and it matched well with a glass of Côte de Rhone. The Roasted Tarragon Chicken was even larger and came with Dauphinois potatoes and matched well with a glass of Cahors. Overall we found the meal quite expensive. Many of the dishes are retro classics from the 1970’s such as Black Forest Gateau, Wiener Schnitzel and Salt Beef.

For people-watching the centre tables or those facing inwards are best. The bar is small and it’s a place where every nook and cranny is filled with diners. Advance booking is advised.

DSCN6119-1Fashion Fabulous looks at 450 restaurants, bars, cafes and hotels in London and picks the top 130 for reviews in our chapter on places where fashionistas go. We were so excited when we visited Beyond London a newly opened bar with cocktails from award winning mixologist Andy Mil and brilliant Pan Asian food chef Ian Pengelly that we couldn’t wait to share some our experiences with you. A full review will be appearing in the next edition of Fashion Fabulous London available in all good bookshops and on Amazon and many independent bookshop websites.

Modern Cocktails, Pan Asian cuisine

Beyond London specialises in fantastic cocktails presented in an entertaining way. We kicked off with Va Va Boom that arrives smoking in a mini glass teapot and had a great ginger kick to it! This works well when eating the beautifully presented Pan Asian food here as does the Permafrost cocktail made with Tanqueray 10, coconut, cachacas, cardamom that had a wonderful flavour.

DSCN6118-1Beyond London is a sleek downstairs modern lounge with comfortable light green sofas, and tables to suit couples looking for a relaxing evening through to large groups wanting a great night out. With a good playlist, the volume level was quite comfortable for us to speak without having to shout.  DJ’s play Thurs-Sun from 10pm with food finishing about midnight.

To start, we opted for some enjoyable Edamame Chilli Garlic whilst looking through the short menu divided conveniently into small plates, large plates, sides and happy endings..

DSCN6124-1Mixed Bubbling and Smoking Sashimi arrived amazingly smoking! The salmon, tuna and yellowtail was perfectly delicious. Chilli and salt squid arrives warm with Adjud dipping sauce.

DSCN6125-1.jpgA tower of Black Angus Kushi with grated ginger was substantial portion to eat.

On the Large Plates section of the menu, we can vouch for the Sirloin of Beef Bulgogi with chive mash as being excellent. Also of a very high standard is the Crab Tempura that is of a beautiful texture and taste that comes with a dried chilli and pink sauce served in an elegant coupe glass.

Beyond London is a definitely a place that we look forward re-visiting for its wonderful selection of cocktails and dishes.DSCN6123-1
