We look at over a thousand fashion shops in London and then pick the top 200 and review them in detail. From luxurious Bond Street to edgy Shoreditch and Brick Lane we give unbiased reviews of the hottest places to buy fashion. Here we give an excerpt from the upcoming edition of Fashion Fabulous London.

Belstaff, 135 New Bond Street, London W1S 2TQ t: 0207 495 5897 |Mon-Sat 10am-7pm, Sun 12pm-6pm | Nearest Tube Bond Street, 5 min walk | http://www.belstaff.co.uk | Category: British Heritage |TOP 200 Shop  |Womenswear and Menswear |Own label |Sizes: Women: 4-16,   Men: 34-48

The only thing missing from this store is the sound of cool motor bikes revving up and 1920’s aeroplanes taking off. Founded in 1924 in Staffordshire, Belstaff made its name through the innovation of water resistant wax cotton fabrics Belstaff’s classic belted four pocket jackets have had historically a following that included T.E Lawrence and in modern times David Beckham, Sarah Jessica Parker and British trial racer Sammy Miller. In-store you’ll see proudly displayed awesome motor bikes, a table loaded with books on aviators and motorcyclists  that have influenced the collections. To the rear is a dedicated room for Belstaff – Goodwood collaboration. This is a British company but the leather is made in Italy.

DSC_0196-1

On Women’s: Belstaff draws inspiration from female aviators Amy Johnson and Amelia Earhart using leather, shearling, wool, and rabbit fur. The androgenous pieces mixed luxury with practicality. I tried on an eggshell toned leather aviator jacket priced £1395 featuring a front belted neck and waist with three zips that were a bit of a struggle to close.  Service was friendly and the assistant was happy to try different sizes and shapes and he helped with the zip. The changing room was very amenable with a very good table, three mirrors, sofa, and gold wall hooks. I liked the suede yellow fringe sleeve coat at £2250. Lots of jackets, coats, and parkas are essentially the same as the men’s but there are lace dresses, short skirts such as a terrific red leather mini that has real and definite femininity.DSCN6026-2

On Men’s: I tried on a waxed cotton classic jacket with the signature square front pockets that rocked with a Union Jack at the back for £550 celebrating one of the firm’s anniversaries. There are more men’s than women’s with a good selection of jeans, biker boots and brown leather jackets.

Belstaff also has stores at 14 Lamb Street, Spitalfield, E1 and Westfield Shopping Centre, London W12, and is stocked in Selfridges, Harrods and Harvey Nichols and Stuarts, Shepherd Bush.

One of the great things about being insiders to the fashion industry is that we get to go along to fashion trade fairs and see the new collections before the general public. One of the best of the fashion trade fairs is the Scoop London Show at The Saatchi Gallery, King’s Road, London. Hot off the press is our round-up of some of the best that will be hitting London shops soon!

First up, great shoes from Freya Rose ! (see above)

004-1

Freya Rose with Tracy Rose… (Freya is no relation to us!…although it would be great to have a shoe designer in the family!)  The standout feature is the Mother of Pearl hand finished heels.

006-1

This Bolongaro Trevor designed coat unzips to give different looks…

013-1

Nadia Minkoff handbags are available at Nico Didonna’s boutique in Soho, London and many other great stores.

011-1Like many of the designs showing at Scoop, Nadia Minkoff’s bags are mid-market prices and also of very good quality.

025-1

Scoop was very busy with fashion buyers over the three day event.

028Barazandeh Paris are new to the UK and produce some very attractive beaded mittens and socks. Definitely an accessory name to watch for 2017!

029-1

The Vanessa Bruno brand needs no introduction and this burgundy coat was a big hit.

031

…Florals will carry through very much into next autumn/winter.

039-1

Marion Foale with model.

Marion Foale’s designs are hand-knitted in Britain. She told us that they are stocked in the Margaret Howell store on Wigmore Street. The shop is known for stocking greys, black and white – “yes she has stocked my greys….and navys too!”

057

Hudson London showed Liberty print velvets on masculine shapes. Shoes are available in Selfridges, Harrods and House of Fraser.

050-1O. Yang Jewellery. Beautiful shapes between £100-£250 were exceptional value.

Smythson 40 New Bond Street, London W1S 2DE | t: 020 7629 8558 | Mon-Fri, 9.30am-6pm, Thurs, 10am-7pm, Sat 10am-6pm | Nearest Tube Bond Street LU, 4 min walk | www.smythson.com

Category: Classic, Heritage |TOP 200 Shop | Womenswear, Menswear | Own label |

Walk through their Bond Street doors and experience 120 years of contemporary design and heritage style. The holder of three Royal warrants, in the 1920’s Smythson produced stationery for European Royals and Indian Maharajas. Nowadays, for fashionistas the main event is the definitely wow handbags You’ll find high quality lady-like designs by the former Prime Minister’s wife, Samantha Cameron (who in 2007 created the famous Nancy Bag) now off to launch her own fashion label. No prices are visible on items, so you will need to pick them up to look inside and it feels a bit prohibitive to do that here. The sales staff veer on the sniffy side, but are first class bag tour guides. Each bag comes with its own tour! The exterior is very formal; inside it’s tastefully decorated with white columns and arches.

On Women’s: Many bags have product branding, including “Established 1887 Smythson of Bond Street” arranged over three lines, so is very conspicuous. The 1887 Tote in calf leather with lambskin interior is £1495, whilst a large Tote from the Eliot collection at £1250 made in soft nubuck and taurillon has their signature Nile blue thread and striped lining. Also interesting colours such as was the pale blue Panama zip Tote at £595. Also there’s a good range of clutches, purses and key rings to match. Classic wallets are around the £200.

002-1On Men’s: We liked the denim blue briefcase at £995 that comes with a wing lock closure that is available in black, brown or navy. The 24 hour travel bags were very smart at £1205. A laptop bag in black, or a brown goatskin computer case £1100 with handles, were hard to choose between. Another tote bag with shoulder strap was £1295. The large navy shoulder messenger in deerskin Burlington Collection could hold two laptops, was £795, and with two zippers looked attractive.

Smythson is also available at 135 Sloane St, SW1; 214 Westbourne Grove, Notting Hill, W11; 7 Royal Exchange EC3; Selfridges, Harrods, and Harvey Nichols.

ITV Tracy Rose Ladies Day 2016

ITV 28th July 2016 Tracy Rose wearing her “Summer Breeze Hat” at Glorious Goodwood Ladies Day Photo credit PA

Fashion was at its peak for July to the 100,000+ sell-out packed crowd of enthusiastic racegoers at the Qatar Glorious Goodwood Festival, West Sussex, England.

At Ladies Day, most women wore fascinators or hats although there is no strict dress code. Lots picked pinks, reds and floral prints and glamorous high heels. In the Richmond Enclosure, where we were the dress code for men was jacket and tie. Many men opted for linens suits and Panama hats although blue suits were very popular too!

Tracy Rose’s “Summer Breeze Hat” in lilac, yellow and pink satins were entwined into a plaited bow with the ends flying out into the air inspired by the gentle winds of the Goodwood Racecourse. The Summer Breeze Hat is another of Tracy’s designs creating the vivacious illusion of movement. Tracy Rose was the first hat designer to create millinery in motion. It stems from her background as a ballet dancer.

DSCN6003-1Fashion Fabulous has been going to London Fashion Week for sixteen years and over the years seen many amazing shows, presentations, interviewed inspiring designers and had the pleasure of attending lots of great parties! Compiled are some the highlights of the latest London Fashion Week that took place on 18th-22nd September…

Here’s Issa (above) showing the sheer elegance of pure whites at their London Fashion Week catwalk show.

DSCN6001-1Signature draping was used on silk and jersey dresses. Issa showed fascinating geometric prints that are sure to be a big hit in London stores next Spring.

This time the hub of London Fashion Week moved from Somerset House to Brewer Street Car Park, Soho! The highlight of the London Fashion Calendar this is the go to event where top and upcoming designers showed their Spring/Summer 2016 collections on the catwalk or exhibit at this trade exhibition. London hotels and restaurants are filled with the international fashion set. Besides the on-schedule shows, Fashion Scout ran a parallel alternative schedule of catwalk shows and exhibits at the Freemasons Hall, Covent Garden. Also On|Off was back with shows at the Vinyl Factory in Marshall Street and new to London Fashion Week was Scoop at the Saatchi Gallery, King’s Road.

DSCN5991-1A great presentation at Edeline Lee (above) featured aqua, lilac, primrose yellow and coral colour blocked in a cool relaxed but striking manner.

DSCN5996-1Vielma opted for a retro ” Vegas baby” theme. Midnight blues with star motifs are going to be a favourite in this collection.

Fashion maximalism ruled at Fyodor Golan’s catwalk show! The inspiration apparently was “Transformers” the sci-fi iconic futuristic robots.

Fyodor Golan used lots of colour! The shoes were made in collaboration with Kat Maconie.

DSCN6000-1Dame Zandra Rhodes new collection was inspired by Malaysia where its produced.

DSCN6003-1We liked Robert Wun’s collection at On|Off at the Vinyl Factory, Soho

…and Marketa Martiskova also at On|Off

Fashion Fabulous 3rd Edition cover

Thursday 8th November: It was all happening down at Uniqlo’s flagship store at 311 Oxford Street, London W1 where an exclusive invitation only “As seen in Vogue” party took place with Pixie Geldolf’s Band “Violet” playing to London’s fashionistas. Guests sipped passion fruit martinis and Prosecco as they soaked up the music and great fashion basics on display on the three floors of this wonderful store. Amongst the partygoers were Leah Weller (mod star, Paul Weller’s daughter), Fazer from N Dubz, TV presenters Zara Martin, Gizzi Erskine, Laura Jackson, model Portia Freeman, and musician Lou Hayter. Browsing the rails it gave us a great opportunity to stock up on our favourite Heattech tops. Their Heattech range absorbs body moisture from the movement of body droplets that actually generates heat to keep you warm. Something we’ll all be needing as the winter cold bites!

Uniqlo stores are also at 118 and 170 Oxford Street; 84-86 Regent Street; 75 Brompton Road , Knightsbridge, W8; 54 Kensington High Street; Unit 68 Southside Shopping Centre, Wandsworth SW18; Unit 2, 51 The Broadway, Wimbledon and Unit 2048-2049 Westfield Shopping Centre, Arial Way, London W12.

We eagerly recently visited the London Book Fair at Earls Court and found it one of the busiest times it had ever been. With 1500 international companies exhibiting it was a great opportunity to catch up with our many contacts within the publishing industry. As authors of Fashion Fabulous London that was showcased there, we were totally impressed by the wide variety of informative and beautifully created fashion books.

Catching our eye were the V&A books, Shoes by Lucy Pratt and Linda Woolley, and Bags by Clare Wilcox. Also well produced reads are British Textiles 1700 to the Present by Linda Parry and Dior by Alexandra Palmer. We featured the Victoria and Albert Museum in our current edition of Fashion Fabulous as it also has a superb selection of jewellery designers and historically referenced clothes in its shop.

Amongst the highlights also were British designer, Mary Quant’s story and for the technically minded were works dedicated to fabrics such as velvet and muslin. Visiting the Harper Collins stand Rachelle Bergstein’s, Women from the Ankle down will be of great interest to shoe addicts.

China was the market focus this year and contemporary Chinese authors were spotlighted. However, we found the Digital Zone featuring international companies that gave us some great ideas for future editions of our book series.

At the end of the day we were invited along to drinks at Wiley and Pearson and a few others!

The dress code was dress to impress at Salon Privé,  the luxury super and vintage car event held at the delightful lawns of London Syon Park.  The fashions revved up on Ladies’ Day with everyone making a special effort.

This year saw lots more women wearing entrance hats with many wearing floral dresses in pink and greens or graphic prints with an elegant look. Enchanting were those who wore dresses in the style of the period reflecting the cars that they were interested in.

One woman held a frilly vintage parasol stood fascinated by the 1930’s cars, whilst the majority of men opted for dark suits, navy jackets, light trousers and open neck shirts.

Pommery champagne flowed throughout the day and after a splendid lunch I  was whisked off in a 1937 BMW 328 Roadster around the concourse at Syon Park. Wow! How I love vintage cars.

Salon Privé takes place annually in June and details about the next one are on http://www.salonprivelondon.com
